Your guys dominated the game all day and had a 28 point lead with nine minutes to play... if they just hold serve the rest of the way out, which they did, they "earn a decisive victory".

'Bama had depth issues throughout Shula's tenure. Face it, the guy, for whatever reason, liked to tempt fate. Sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor.

We'll just have to disagree on this one.

And that's a great call if you're playing NCAA 2008. In the real world, though, there's more to it than the score.

Well, all I know is I remember thinking when 'Bama's first team offense took the field at that point "what is Shula thinking, putting Croyle back out there?"

I had the right concept, just the wrong player.

I don't think there's a "benefit of the doubt" here, I think that was the correct coaching decision under the circumstances.

Was Florida going to score 28 points in 9 minutes? No, probably not. Would it have been the greatest comeback in history if they had? No.

Pretending like "is the game out of reach for the other team" is the only question worth considering when determining when to start playing the scrubs is naive at best.

You really think UF was going to score 28 points in 9 minutes?

I might be inclined to give Shula the benefit of the doubt here, except I remember his equally puzzling decision to insert an obviously injured Brodie Croyle into the '03 game with Georgia.

All that to say nothing of the fact that ND said just weeks ago that they really wanted to play Alabama, they just didn't have the time.

I don't think they're far enough apart, even now, to make scheduling one or the other, even for the 2009 season, appreciably better than the other, to say nothing of 2011.

Saban's recruiting class this year was better than Stoops' and I really don't think they're that far apart. Oklahoma should have a better season than Alabama this year, but next year? Who knows... give Saban another huge recruiting class and we could be looking at Alabama playing better football than Oklahoma. Remember that two seasons ago Alabama was 10-2 while OU was 8-4.

This is not intended as a low blow - but Alabama ain't exactly Oklahoma these days. They could be in 2011, but... not yet.

Who did Richt lose to by 28+?

I've been scratching my head over this one - there's a 21 point loss to LSU and a couple of 18 point losses to Tennessee and Auburn I can remember, but I'm drawing a blank over a four TD loss.

Re: Countdowns: You're right. There's a big difference between BON's countdown and RBRs and it is a bit unfair to lump them together. That said, I still think that the BON countdown is 80% countdown and 20% content. RBR's is more like 99% countdown. So, you know, if your readers like it, go nuts, I guess. You don't have to answer to little ol' me. I just don't like it. Can't please everybody all the time.

As for verbosity... I'd point out a few flaws with using the CFBBA as a barometer in this specific case.

It was a poll so one has to believe that there was some measure of favoritism and bias in the voting. (i.e. it's a 'Bama blogger, so I'm going to vote for them!)

It was an internet poll, which immediately makes any claims of mandate questionable. See, for example, the Hot Blogger competition.

Kyle didn't win, so claims of "majority" are also pretty weak.

Thinking that someone writes good prose and thinking they should write less of it are not mutually exclusive positions. In fact, most of my writing profs in college held that view of me.

This isn't really about Kyle, specifically. He's just a good example, so pointing out that he won an award is irrelevant. Especially when the vast majority of the rest of the winners don't have the same problem with wordiness.

But, at the end of the day, nobody really has to answer to me. This is just one guy's opinion. But thanks for the comment, and please accept my apologies for not being appropriately discriminating regarding the countdowns.
